Brigit was called the "High One". She was the Goddess of Herbalism, midwifery and Healing. She was also in charge of Water as well as Fire. The Sacred wells and springs that are named after or dedicated to this Goddess are too numerous to mention. The story told is that two Lepers came to one of the sacred springs for healing and She told one Leper to wash the other. The leper was cleansed of the disease and Brigit told the man whom was healed, to wash the other leper. The Healed Leper was now disgusted to touch the other man. Brigit washed the leper and struck down the arrogant fellow with Leperousy once more before he left. People made offerings to these wells and springs in the form of coins or, even more ancient, brass or gold rings. Thus the "Wishing Wells". The willow tree that hangs over Brigit's well is governed by the Moon Goddess because the willow loves water, and the moon governs the tides and emotions. It is a tree of Inspiration, and the path to Knowledge. Brigit also governed diviniation. Brigit's familiar is the swan. In Mythology it is said that a swan only sings once-when it is dying. It's song was associated with Prophecy(knowing it's own death), music, and Poetry. A Celtic Poet She Inspires. The High Priestess represents a link to the subconscious mind, the inner world of the Self, which is revealed in dreams, symbols and bringing it to the intellect or waking consciousness.
